Belfry Auditions for Waiting in the Wings
Hamilton County Theatre Guild, which operates The Belfry Theatre, announces auditions for Noel Coward’s “Waiting in the Wings,” directed by Lori Raffel of Carmel.
Auditions will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 11, at Elwood Opera House, 200 S Anderson St., Elwood.
Performances will be April 25-May 4, 2025, at Elwood Opera House, during the Hamilton County Theatre Guild’s 60th anniversary season..
Half of rehearsals will take place in Carmel, with the last half of rehearsals at Elwood Opera House.
“Waiting in the Wings” is Synopsis: Coward's tribute to theater is set in a retirement home for actresses in the 1940s. Residents are all former stars. Jealousies abound, especially between Lotta and another who was also married to her former husband. A tragedy brings them to their senses and a new solarium brings out everyone's good nature.
Playing ages are listed next to the characters and are flexible. The director will ask auditionees to read from the script.
Characters: 14 women (some roles can be doubled), four men
- Bonita Belgrave (A bright woman with a theatrical sense of humor) – Age 60+
- Cora Clarke (Very colorful) – Late 60s
- Maud Melrose (Vivacious) – Early 70s
- May Davenport (Immensely dignified) – Mid 70s.
- Almina Clare – Age 80+.
- Estelle Craven (Permanently wistful) – Age 70+.
- Deirdre O’Malley (Lively for her age, speaks with a strong brogue) Age 80+
- Perry Lascoe (Considerate and caring) Age 35-45
- Sylvia Archibald (Gruff and rather masculine) Age 50+
- Osgood Meeker (An elderly gentleman) Age 65+.
- Lotta Bainbridge (Well-preserved, well made-up) Age 70+
- Dora (Lotta’s dresser) Age 4-50.
- Doreen (The maid) Age 2-30.
- Sarita Myrtle (A wispy older lady, somewhat distracted) Age 70s.
- Zelda Fenwick 30-40.
- Dr Jevons – Role may be doubled with Alan Bennet as the Dr. is only on stage for a very brief time.
- Alan Bennet (Neat dresser with a quality of failure) 35 to late 40s
- Topsy Baskerville – Role may be doubled with another role.
